Achieve Early College High School
Applications for Achieve Early College High School  are now available in the counselor’s office.

The deadline to submit the applications is Friday, March 2, 2012 to the counselor.

It is also REQUIRED that you and your parent/guardian attend at least one parent info session.

Thank you, Mrs. Erica de la Garza, for your dedication to our district.  On behalf of Morris Middle School, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for your willingness to listen to the concerns of our community and for making McAllen ISD the best district to educate our students.  Once again, "Thank You" for all your hard work to make McAllen ISD the district it is today. 

Family Engagement Academy
On Saturday, January 21st, the McHi Vertical Team Parent Training Specialists will be having a Saturday Parent Academy Mini Conference from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm hosted by Morris Middle School.  Click here for more information.
Christmas Canned Food Drive
The Christmas Canned Food Drive was a tremendous success!  We were able to
collect a total of
2,548 lbs of canned food items (3405 cans).

All Morris students and staff members participated to make the Canned Food Drive such a tremendous success. 

The students who brought in the most canned goods were:

6th grade:
Cristian Morua with a total of 92 cans
            Nathan Quintanilla with a total of 112 cans
7th grade: Ramiro Jimenez with a total of 984 cans
8th grade:
Kelly Marlow with a total of 206 cans

UIL Academic Competition At A Glance

 

Calculator Application (6th – 8th ):  A thinker’s delight, this 30 minute contest develops mathematical reasoning and knowledge and requires the application of problems solving skills toward realistic problems.

Sponsor: Mrs. G. Kirby   Room 19

 

Mathematics (6th – 8th):  In a comprehensive, multiple choice math test, students are challenged beyond their grade level in a variety of general math questions, including algebraic equations. 

Sponsor:  Mrs. L. Rock   Room 37

 

Number Sense (6th – 8th ):  Contestants find high speed solutions to math problems in this exciting and challenging 10 minute contest in mental mathematics.

Sponsor:  Mrs. K. McCann   Room 22

 

Science (6th – 8th): There two divisions:  earth science and life science.  Tests for each division consist of multiple choice questions covering subject matter form science textbooks and a reading list of science publications.

Sponsor:  Mr. Silva     Room 10

 

Impromptu Speaking (6th – 8th): Students are challenged to think quickly and communicate effectively.  Students select one of three topics, organize their thoughts for three minutes, and then speak for mo more than five minutes without using notes.

Sponsor: Mrs. V. Guzman  Room P4

 

Modern Oratory (6th-8th): A challenge in writing and speaking, students prepare a short original speech to examine the pros and cons of an issue and defend their points of view.  This format can incorporate a variety of skills which complement the essential elements.

Sponsor: Mrs. Perez    Room 16

 

One Act Play (6th-8th): Students draw upon a wide range of skills as they work together to creatively perform a play in one act under time and set limitations.

Sponsors:  Mrs. Gomez and Ms. Guzman  

 

Dictionary Skills (6th – 8th) Students use all elements of a dictionary and learn practical techniques for extracting and applying information.

Sponsor:  Mrs. Canales    Room 6

 

Listening Skills (6th – 8th):  Good listening skills enhance any academic area, and they study materials are useful for all students.  Contestants may take notes as they listen to contest script, and then use these notes as they answer objective test questions.

Sponsor:  Mrs. Rock    Room 37

 

Maps, Charts, and Graphs (6th-8th): This event is designed to provide students with experience in obtaining information from visual sources, a valuable life skill. Some maps, graph and charts needed for answering the test questions are included in the test.  Other questions are taken from an atlas which students bring to the contest.

Sponsor:  Mrs. Ruiz     Room 25.

 

Ready Writing (6th – 8th): This event is a challenge for the gifted writer.  Students are given a choice between two prompts.  Each prompt defines the audience and provides the purpose for writing.

Spelling (6th-8th): As spelling words are pronounced at approximately five words per minute, contestants may either write or print each word.  While up to 20% of the test words come from outside sources, at least 80% come from the A+ Spelling list.

Oral Reading (6th – 8th): In this event the students, selects, prepares, and reads a literary selection within six-minute time limit.  Students explore literature to share with their audience and are evaluated on aspects of their performance such as appropriateness of selection, understanding the material, control of the presentation, and overall effectiveness.
